General Information

The only Design Museum in the Upper Midwest

The Goldstein Museum of Design, the only design museum in the upper Midwest, is part of the University of Minnesota and housed in the College of Design.  We are devoted to the teaching, research, and exhibition of design.  Our emphasis is on art and design closest to people's lives.  Founded in 1976, the museum's foundations lie in the work and collections of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein, professors in the University’s Design Department from 1910 to the late 1940s.

The Goldstein annually presents three exhibitions plus the senior student show.  Exhibition topics cover the breadth of design - from clothing and textiles to decorative art and graphic design.  Most exhibitions are accompanied by public programs for university and community audiences.  Occasionally, related exhibitions are developed for satelite venues in the community.
