Orange Blossom Dress
This piece titled “The Orange Blossom” is one of a series of dresses inspired by the Spanish tragedy “Blood Wedding” by Federico Garcia Lorca. Lorca’s work was imbedded with symbolism and I interpreted these symbols into four garments, the orange blossom, the moon, death, and the bride. The orange blossom symbolizes marriage, eternal love, and fruitfulness. In the play, the bride wore an orange blossom wreath. The orange tree is very rare in that is bears fruit and blossoms at the same time. The fullness of the bubble skirt represents the fruit of the orange using 42 yards to tulle as filling. The 3-dimensional orange piece wrapping around the body portray its peel and was constructed with vinyl, tape, saran wrap, and fiberfill. The orange hat has white flowers sewn onto it to portray the blossom of the orange tree.
