Modern Insertions into a Traditional Framework
An addition to a 17th-century parish church in Oaxaca, Mexico called for a new priest’s house, office spaces, a library, two gathering spaces, an office for an itinerant doctor, and an overall redesign of the atrium. The site forms a boundary between a loud, busy highway to the south and a calm, traditional neighborhood to the north. Nascent within the additions were design issues that would not only have to address modern insertions into a traditional context, but also make of the context opportunities for weaving the isolated site back into a larger urban context.
